Substitute Nurse
Essential Duties
- Administers medications and treatments as ordered.
- Provides care for student and staff illness and accidents.
- Administers care based on individual health care plans and individual emergency care plans.
- Serves as liaison between the home and the school regarding student health concerns.
- Documents all encounters in the Electronic Health Record.
- Follows communicable disease control procedures and informs administration and/or parents regarding school exclusion and readmission.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)
- Must possess current Virginia state license as a Registered Nurse, or Licensed Practical Nurse.
- Must possess current certification in CPR.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Knowledge of current practices for common childhood illnesses and chronic diseases: asthma management, diabetes, insulin pen and pumps, seizure management.
- Ability to perform skilled nursing care such as catheterization, suctioning, gastrostomy feeding tubes, insulin administration, insulin pump skills and nebulizer treatments.
- Computer skills.
- Baccalaureate degree in nursing or related field is preferred.
- Experience in pediatric and/or community or public health nursing is preferred.
- Prior experience in school nursing, or acute care setting is preferred.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; and to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead.
Ability to stand, walk, and sit frequently or for prolonged periods of time. Additionally, physical abilities include lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling, stooping/crouching, reaching and handling, talking/hearing conversations, and near/far visual acuity/depth perception/color vision/field of vision.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Duties are normally performed in a school/classroom environment. Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
