Job Title:                  Student Support Monitor

Job Summary

Position is responsible for assisting the classroom teacher by performing tasks which are assigned and directed by the teacher. The tasks must not infringe upon the responsibilities reserved for the certified teacher. It is vital that both the staff and the monitor fully understand the limitations as well as the responsibilities of the monitor. The purpose of the Student Support Monitor is to actively participate in and prevent behavioral problems and/ or provide support for their assigned students. This involves active communication with the teacher and may involve a written behavior plan for the specific student. Students are to be in the educational environment/classroom they are assigned to, unless the teacher or administrator reassigns the student and monitor to another location. It is essential that the monitor stay with the student at all times, except during the monitor’s scheduled break or as specified in the child’s plan. The Student Support Monitor should not be assigned other duties within the school that separate them from their student.

 

Essential Duties

These responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following activities:

  • Assists students to achieve instructional goals and objectives.
  • Assists students with personal care and toileting needs.
  • Assists in preparing and maintaining daily student data.
  • Assists classroom teacher in specific tasks that will lead to student achieving instructional goals.
  • Escorts student at all times.
  • Reports any student problems or issues to the team.
  • Performs related tasks as required for individual student needs.

 

Hours and Benefits

There is a plan to decrease the level of assistance needed to complete a task or activity. Services will be faded in accordance to policy. This is not a contracted position. Employment is based upon student need and funding and can be discontinued at any time. The Student Support Monitor will not be employed during suspensions and planned student absences. If the student is unexpectedly absent, or when the assigned student is suspended out of school, the assistant will not be employed for the duration of the absence or suspension. Because this position is considered part-time, it carries no benefits such as sick leave or personal days. *Information regarding health insurance will be provided upon request. *

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)

  • Demonstrate basic reading, writing, and computation skills.
  • Have previous experience working with groups of children.
  • Have good physical and emotional health.
  • Respect and protect the confidentiality of students, staff, families and so forth.
  • Be willing to accept teacher direction.
  • Office management skills, such as typing, computer literacy, and filing for Medicaid services

 

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 50 pounds; and to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead.

 

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Supervision and Job Performance

It is understood that this position is contingent upon the development of a positive working relationship among the student, teacher, and monitor. If the working relationship is not conductive to student progress, the monitor may be discontinued. Supervision is provided by the classroom teacher, building administrator, and the Director of Special Education.
