Job Summary

The position is responsible for ensuring the successful operation of an elementary school by planning, organizing, administering, and managing the assigned school. Directs and coordinates the school's educational, administrative, and counseling activities.

Essential Duties

  1. Develops, organizes, administers, and evaluates educational programs to ensure conformance with state and school board standards, including programs for students with mental or physical disabilities.
  2. Serves as an instructional leader for the school and drives teaching and learning designed to meet students' needs for continuous improvement and equitable academic and social-emotional outcomes.
  3. Directs the design and preparation of class schedules, cumulative records, student performance, and attendance reports.
  4. Establishes and maintains relationships with colleges, community organizations, and other schools to coordinate educational services.
  5. Supports systems for promoting positive behavior and tiered intervention to meet student needs; maintains high standards of student conduct and motivates all students to engage in continuous learning and development—Confers with teachers, students, and parents concerning educational and behavioral problems in school.
  6. Works with school staff and the community to maintain an atmosphere conducive to learning and appropriate student behavior.
  7. Attends special events and school-sponsored activities.
  8. Manages the school website and social media.
  9. Monitors the school building and property to ensure a safe and secure environment.
  10. Plans, develops, and administers the school budget; monitors budget expenditures and manages school resources.
  11. Plans and directs facility management to ensure proper utilization, care, and attractiveness of buildings and grounds.
  12. Requisitions and allocates supplies, equipment, and instructional materials as needed.
  13. Supervises and evaluates the performance of each member of the school staff, and establishes individual improvement programs consistent with the division's staff development program. Oversees the evaluation of teacher performance.
  14. Advises the central office of staff needs, and participates in the recruitment, employment, assignment, promotion, transfer, nonrenewal, and dismissal of certificated and classified personnel.
  15. Supervises the maintenance of accurate bookkeeping and accounting of school funds.
  16. Attends professional conferences, seminars, training, and workshops related to education and/or education administration.
  17. Performs any other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in instructional education, and/or instructional leadership.
  • Five (5) years of successful work experience; preferably as a teacher, with some experience at the elementary school level.
  • Possession of a Virginia Postgraduate Professional License with appropriate endorsement.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the current issues, principles, and practices in public elementary school education and the ability to apply them to meet the needs of a school.
  • Knowledge and effective skills in curriculum development, instructional practices, interpretation of test data, and budget development.
  • Ability to administer and manage the operations of an elementary school.
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone and enter data into a computer; see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors, and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in regular classrooms, outdoors, and on the phone; physical agility to lift to 25 pounds; and to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk, and reach overhead.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

Duties are usually performed in a school/classroom environment. Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
