Job Summary

Provides health care services to students by performing the following duties.

 

Essential Duties

  1. All functions listed below are required to be done in accordance with the Code of Virginia; Regulations Governing the Practice of Nursing (2015) 18 VAC 90-20-420 et. seq. **Refers employees to the health center or his/her doctor for further evaluation and follow up.
  2. Assists school health coordinator and school administrators to establish, review, and revise policies, procedures, and specific programs for school health education and services.
  3. Provides case management for students with chronic and newly diagnosed health care needs; participates in Individualized Educational Program teams (IEPs) and 504 meetings as necessary; obtains Individualized Care Plans and the health alert documents; distributes health alerts to administrators and to all necessary school personnel in a timely manner in accordance with the Family Education and Privacy Act. (FERPA)
  4. Ensures the orientation, training, supervision, and evaluation of paraprofessionals, as needed, to comply with the nurse practice act and other relevant statutes and regulations.
  5. Administers and/or trains appropriate personnel to administer medication to appropriate students, with parental permission and a Licensed Health Care Provider's order for prescription medication; keeps medication permission forms on file.
  6. Trains, regularly evaluates, and assesses competency of clinic assistants or school administrator delegated personnel in medication administration and procedures to support specific healthcare needs of students.
  7. Coordinates and/or performs health care, developmental, and other screenings per state mandates; evaluates findings, refers and follows-up as required by *Virginia school law and School Board policy.
  8. Provides interpretation on a variety of documentation, files, and records (e.g. health care plans, accident reports, immunization records, etc.) in compliance with local, state and federal requirements.
  9. Collaborates with school administrators and personnel in assessing and improving the social and emotional climate of students and faculty and involves them in maintaining a healthful school environment.
  10. Ensures compliance with all school laws protecting the confidentiality of medical information, of school health *laws and of regulations for school officials as needed and personnel, parents and the community; obtains written consent from the parent/guardian to share information.
  11. Carries out communicable disease prevention and infection control based on current guidelines for universal precautions, prevention of bloodborne pathogens exposure and hazardous medical waste disposal.
  12. Administers first aid and emergency care; performs scheduled healthcare procedures per medical health care provider order.
  13. Reports significant student injuries, accidents, and illness trends to the superintendent, building principal, and school health coordinator.
  14. Responds to frequently encountered health issues, providing counseling and crisis intervention as required by state and local policy (e.g., adolescent pregnancy, substance abuse, child neglect or abuse issues.)
  15. Attends meetings with the school administrators/school health coordinator when required.
  16. Ensures adequate supplies are maintained in the school clinic; checks first aid supplies and equipment per policy; secures and monitors medications including controlled substances as required by *law.
  17. Prepares and maintains a variety of documentation files and records (e.g. clinic records, health care plans, immunization records, Bloodborne Pathogen exposure incident reports, etc.) in compliance with *local, state and federal requirements.
  18. Advises administrators, teachers, and cafeteria staff on all students with food allergies according to FERPA; obtains care plans for students with food allergies and advises school personnel in recognizing the signs of food allergies and the appropriate steps to take including the administration of epinephrine.
  19. Provides direct nursing services to students and **staff in the school.
  20. Writes plans of care for Medicaid per Department of Medical Services (DMAS) guidelines.
  21. Performs other related duties as required.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; and to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead.

 

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  Duties are normally performed in a school/classroom environment.  Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
