Job Summary

The position is responsible for assisting teachers in meeting the special needs of students to help them achieve their academic and social potential.

Essential Duties

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.   1. Supports the teacher in special education classes with all aspects of the day, including instruction, reviews, and behavior interventions.
  2. Ensures compliance with assignments and extracurricular duties outlined by the teacher and/or principal teacher in implementing daily and long-range lesson plans; provides instructional support and remediation during academic lessons and various activities.
  3. Provides functional support with daily life skills.
  4. Assists the teacher in preparing the classroom and instructional materials.
  5. Monitors students in the classroom and provides coverage when the teacher is away.
  6. Assumes a fair share of the classroom duties as outlined by the classroom teacher.
  7. Monitors classroom behaviors, follows behavior plans, and assists students with adaptive behavior skills.
  8. Performs other duties as assigned.

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone and enter data into a computer; see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors, and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in regular classrooms, outdoors, and on thephonee; physical agility to lift to 25 pounds; and to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk, and reach overhead.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

Duties are usually performed in a school/classroom environment. Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
